Internet Connection Wizard (Windows Computers)

Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express

Open your program. If you are doing so for the first time you may be presented with a configuration Wizard. If so, go ahead and follow the instructions. If not, select Tools and then Accounts from the menu. You'll see a screen that looks like this.

Fig. 1. Internet Accounts

Select Add to set up a new account.

Fig. 2. Internet Connection Wizard (a)

You can't go wrong here. Enter anything you like and select Next.

Fig. 3. Internet Connection Wizard (b)

Here is where you enter your e-mail address. By the way, e-mail addresses are not case sensitive. MyName@infolane.com is the same as myname@infolane.com. The traditional form is to use all lowercase letters, but the choice is up to you. There can never be spaces in an e-mail address. Once you entered your e-mail address, select Next.

Fig. 4. Internet Connection Wizard (c)

Here is where you provide the names of your mail server. For Infolane clients, both your incoming mail server and your outgoing mail server have the same name:

postal.infolane.com
Enter it in both spaces and select Next.

Definitions for those interested

  • POP Post Office Protocol, an instruction set for e-mail that is used by computers all over the internet. It is the type of mail system we are using.

  • SMTP Send Mail Transport Protocol, the instruction set for sending outbound messages.

  • HTTP Hypertext Transport Protocol, the instruction set for sending Web pages across the Internet.

This is important! With postal.infolane.com, your account name is the same thing as your e-mail address! So in the window here, enter your full e-mail address.

You may enter your password here and check the box that remembers it. Or for added security you can omit your password, in which case you will need to enter it every time you start your e-mail client. That ensures your privacy if other people use your computer.

This next screen says you're finished. Don't believe it. The configuration is still not complete. Select Finish to save all your work.

Then proceed to follow our instructions to modify your settings.
